"The God Machine" in Review

Journal Entry: Sun Nov 8, 2009, 8:10 PM

First off, I am not a writer by any means, and my thoughts are random. So this review, despite my best efforts, is hardly as good as the book deserves. But if it gets just one more person interested in the material, then I feel I have done something right.

The Uber-Talented :iconspookychan: who I have been a fan of for several years now, has finally achieved the dream of dreams and got her comic published. I have had the honor of watching and supporting many artists over the years. And ever once in a while, I get to watch all their hard work pay off. This is an endless source of inspiration for me, knowing that if I can get my butt in gear, I might get my story out there too, but this isn't about me, this is about the wonderful Chandra Free.

Chandra is hardly new to my journals, I have mentioned her works before, as I try to do from time to time for the artists that inspire me the most here.

"The God Machine" has been the blood and sweat of Chan for over 10 years. We have seen her early pages, which were beautiful, drawn over and again, as with many artists, never happy with her work until perfect. Time and time again she improves, which is always amazing, considering her first attempts often are better then any of us could hope to achieve in a life time.

Basics: The preview book is 48 pages long and has a $3.95 price tag. 48 pages at 4 bucks is pure awesome. Especially in today's economy. : )

Artwork: Secondly, unlike many of the main stream comics these days, the cover art matches the art inside. For those of you not familiar with the point I am bringing up here, it is common knowledge that a lot of comics these days have kick ass cover art (to attract your eye and get you to buy it, same idea as Magazines I suppose) but then have a different artist doing the pages inside, and generally this artist doesn't hold up. In "The God Machine" the cover art is beautiful, the interior art is beautiful. You get exactly what you expect from the cover.

Story: Chan is truly gifted with talent. Not only is she a great artist, but she is also a great writer. She has a sharp wit and really knows how to make her characters come to life. You are immediately pulled into her world and absorbed by every line. And remember kids, her story has just started. Guy is the main character, and he has a few issues. Aside from the untimely death of his high school sweetheart Sith, he is starting to see monsters and Gods. Though there are deities in this tale, it isn't a religious book by any means. No preachy harping here. So far the story has a great mix of dark tones, with light comedy. I really don't know what to compare it too, since this is a very original story. This is the part of the review that I suck at. So bare with me here. Trust me when I say you need to get out and read it for yourself. You won't regret it. And you will be supporting a fellow Deviant artist, which as we all know, is a major point to our community.

Hopefully my little review has peaked your interest in "The God Machine" and at the very least directed your eye to a great Deviant Artist.

For preview pages be sure to check out Chan's comic page here on dA. :iconthegodmachinecomic:

Assuming this review gets a positive response, I plan to review two other comics from Deviant Artists.

Next planned: Anathema.
